I'm JD McGibney, and today I'll be chatting with a guitar virtuoso. A true master of her craft, versatile in her style, proficient in her music theory, and even an airplane pilot on the side: The amazing and wonderful Gretchen Menn! Today we are going to be talking about Coping Mechanisms. For those who are not familiar with the term,Coping mechanisms are the strategies people often use in the face of stress and/or trauma to help manage painful or difficult emotions. Coping mechanisms can help people adjust to stressful events while helping them maintain their emotional well-being. It should be pointed out that Coping Mechanisms are different from Defense Mechanisms. Coping Mechanisms tend to be conscious efforts and actions individuals take in order to manage their emotional reaction to an external situation, whereas Defense Mechanisms tend to be unconscious "Knee Jerk" reactions. Healthy coping mechanisms can come in a variety of forms such as exercising, playing sports, using humor to de-escalate a situation, or even simply talking about a stressful event and your feelings with a supportive person.

I'm JD McGibney, and today I'll be talking with one of the most diverse entertainers I've ever had the pleasure of being introduced to. Someone that started off their career on the ballet stage at the age of three, moved to theater by the time she was in high school, started acting in film by the time she was in college, started her own theater company, has been on Broadway, and has even produced several independent films. Today I'll be talking with the ever so wonderful and elegant, Elissa Piszel. Today we are going to be talking about Bulimia Nervosa, or more commonly referred to as just Bulimia. Bulimia is an emotional disorder involving distortion of body image and an obsessive desire to lose weight, in which bouts of extreme overeating are followed by depression and self-induced vomiting, purging, or fasting. According to the organization "Mirror" bulimia affects 1.5% of women and 0.5 percent of men in the United States. That translates to about 4.7 million women, and 1.5 million men. The age people start developing bulimia seems to be getting younger and younger, and the average age of onset is in the late teens. Those who do develop bulimia often end up having self-harm tendencies, develop depression, and often have a plethora of health problems from chemical imbalances, swelling of glands, and even heart issues.

In this episode we'll be talking about Abuse. This is a heavy topic we're going to be talking about today, so as a heads up, there might be some significant emotional triggers ahead in this discussion. To give an exact definition, abuse is to ??treat a person or an animal with cruelty or violence, especially regularly or repeatedly. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, one in every three women, and one in every four men experiences some form of physical violence from an intimate partner. According to the Center for Family Justice, one in every four women and one in every six men are sexually abused in their lifetime. In cases of child abuse, according to the Children's Advocacy Center of Tennessee, roughly 700,000 children are abused in the United States every year. Of which, one out of every 10 is sexually abused before they are 18. 90% of all abused children in the US know their abusers as well. Nearly 1,700 children die each year from abuse.

According to the ADAA, Anxiety is THE most common mental disorder in the United States, affecting 40 million people (or about 18% of the population) annually. Globally, Anxiety affects about 284 million people every year, which makes it THE most common mental disorder. Also according to the ADAA, only about 36% of people in the United States with Anxiety seek treatment.

Today I am chatting with the endlessly talented, humble, and wonderful Daniele Gottardo! Today we are going to be talking about Expatriate Depression, or "Expat" Depression. Expat Depression is a type of depression specifically found in those who move to a new country. It is associated with higher feelings of anxiety, stress, sadness, and a unique sense of isolation being removed from one's culture. Pre the COVID-19 pandemic, expat depression among immigrants was a difficult enough issue with the regulations put in place by national governments, as well as the initial culture shock of LIVING in a different country. With the added element of the global lockdowns, and restricted international travel, the senses of sadness, anxiety, stress, and isolation among expatriates has increased.

I'm JD McGibney, and today I'll be chatting with one of my favorite singers in hard rock and heavy metal today. She is a powerhouse performer, a master of the stage, and owner of some of the coolest hair in show business. Today we are going to be talking about Depression. This is a mental illness that has come up a few times in previous conversations on this podcast, and it affects millions of people across the globe. To give it an exact definition: Depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. Also called major depressive disorder or clinical depression, it affects how you feel, think and behave and can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, depression affects about 17 million people 18 years and older in a given year. 1.9 million children ages 3-17 are diagnosed with depression. According to the World Health Organization, depression is THE leading cause of disability worldwide. Having its roots in a wide variety of sources from chemical imbalance, to traumatic experiences, Depression is a very prevalent mental illness in the world today. An unfortunate reality that many people face is that they are unaware that they are even dealing with depression, and therefore do not receive the help that they may need.

I'm JD McGibney, and today I'll be chatting with a modern heavy metal icon. One of the most surreal, epic, commanding, and powerful voices I've ever personally heard. She is the brain behind the band Unleash the Archers, a Dungeons and Dragons connoisseur, and every cat's best friend: Brittney Slayes. Today we are going to be talking about Overcoming Prejudice. Prejudice, to give it an exact definition, is a preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience. Prejudice can lead to things such as racism, sexism, or even xenophobia. Prejudice has been an ongoing issue for all humanity throughout recorded history, and oftentimes ends up being the root behind a lot of conflicts. In more recent history, prejudice has led to people calling for significant social reform, such as with the American Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s-1960s, and an ongoing call for equality between men and women in the workplace. Having to face prejudice in one's daily life can oftentimes lead to negative mental health side effects such as stress, anxiety, and depression. In the realm of music, heavy metal specifically, it is heavily male dominated. The ratio of men to women is significantly slanted to the point where if a woman does "make it," she tends to stand out, and usually has to face a plethora of stereotypes.

Today we are going to be talking about Separation Anxiety. Normally, it is a common occurrence in children as they grow and develop, learning to be separated from their parents and loved ones as they become independent. Separation Anxiety can, however, persist into adulthood for a myriad of reasons. In adults, separation anxiety tends to revolve around fear or concern about the wellbeing of a child or spouse. It can lead to bouts of extreme anxiety, or even panic attacks. Over an extended period of time, individuals dealing with Separation anxiety can become withdrawn from their normal social interactions, have difficulty concentrating, and even experience bouts of depression. According to "The Recovery Village," between 1%-6% of adults deal with separation anxiety. Those who do, tend to also have dealt with some sort of traumatic event in relation to their child or significant other. Another common statistic is that Separation anxiety is not uncommon in women who have had difficulties during pregnancy or childbirth.

Today we are going to be talking about Anger Management. Anger management is a psycho-therapeutic program for anger prevention and control. Anger is frequently a result of frustration, or of feeling blocked or thwarted from something that an individual feels is important. Anger can also be a defensive response to underlying fear or feelings of vulnerability or powerlessness. The root cause of an individual's anger can stem from any number of things. Part of the goal of anger management techniques is to identify one's main causes of anger in order to analyze them, and address them in healthy manners. According to Strive Psychiatry, as of 2019, 7.8% of all people living in the United States have intense, poorly controlled, or inappropriate levels of anger.

The brilliant, magnificent, musically talented, hilarious, compassionate, and absolutely wonderful Mr. Rob Rico; solo artist, comedian, performer from Epic Rap Battles of History, and one hell of an amazing person. How're you doing, Rob? Today we're going to be talking about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD. For those that are not fully aware, PTSD is a mental health condition that's triggered by a experiencing or witnessing a terrifying/traumatic event such as war, assault, rape, or physical or emotional abuse. Symptoms of PTSD are usually grouped into four categories: Intrusive Memories, Avoidance, Negative changes in thinking and Mood, and Changes in Physical and Emotional Reactions. These four categories have a wide range of manifesting from having regular and vivid flashbacks of the event, to avoiding people, places, or environments that remind a person of the traumatic event, or even the development of depression or feelings of emotional instability.

I'm JD McGibney, and in this episode I'll be chatting with one of my favorite guitar players on the planet. The masterful, witty, extremely metal, and totally humble Eli Santana of Ignite, Incite, Holy Grail and Huntress! Today we are going to be talking about Self Image. The definition of which is pretty simple and straightforward. Self Image is the view an individual has of themselves. When analyzing self image, there are generally four categories: How you see yourself. How others see you. How you perceive others see you. How you perceive you see yourself. Often we hear of friends and loved ones struggling with their self image, or even find ourselves struggling. Having a negative self image can come from a variety of factors from early childhood development, one's natural personality constantly setting higher and higher standards outside of reasonable reach, or even the actual or perceived standards of the society we live in. Learning to be comfortable with one's self is sometimes a difficult process, and no two individual's journeys are alike. Understanding one's own personality, desires, and motivations are key, as well as their desired role in the world they live in.
