Daily Blitz - 7/28/21 - Cowboys Training Camp Winners & Losers

Just a few training camp practices into the process, and clearly it's too soon to sound an alarm or offer someone a post-season award. Welcome to the Daily Blitz by DSP Media in partnership with CowboysSI.com. There are only 53 spots on an NFL roster. And the competition can be fierce. That means some players stand out above others, and isn't that the whole point of all this? Some winners and losers are more obvious, while others are more subtle. Some players put themselves into bad situations while others are just play the wrong position on the wrong team. There are some defensive players who are already making names for themselves, which is good, since that's the biggest area of concern for most with regard to the 2021 Cowboys. But not to confine ourselves to just players, a coach is also standing out among others. Let's discuss! The Cowboys entered training camp short of their 90-man roster allowance and filled that spot with a position of need. Is it someone who will even make the team? Welcome to the Daily Blitz by DSP Media in partnership with CowboysSI.com. The Cowboys signed their last unsigned draft pick over the weekend so now all 11 picks are under contract for training camp in Oxnard, California. Who, of those 11 might be on the bubble? A free agent is expected to sign with the team this week after he completes his mandatory five-day Covid-19 protocol waiting period. Where will he help this club and does he make this team better? Plus, after just two practices there is already someone making a name for himself in the secondary. Who is it and can he keep up his training camp momentum? Let's discuss! The Dallas Cowboys Blitzcast
FRISCO - The recent NFL tradition of Dallas Cowboys vs New York Giants to open the season ends in 2021. The two teams have played against each other in week one four times since 2015. Rather than starting the season against each other again, viewers will see Cowboys vs. Giants in week five and again in week 15. The Giants were able to end the Cowboys' seven-game winning streak over New York in the season finale last year, and are looking to start their own winning streak against the Cowboys in 2021. The Cowboys have aspirations of reclaiming the NFC East division crown in 2021, and the Giants are one of the teams that stand in their way. What will 2021 bring for Giants vs. Cowboys? CowboysSI.com writer Timm Hamm sat down with Patricia Traina from Sports Illustrated's Giants Country recently to discuss a few things such as: Where things went astray for head coach Mike McCarthy in Year 1 What the new defense might look like under new defensive coordinator Dan Quinn An update on quarterback Dak Prescott and the rest of the Cowboys injured players If Ezekiel Elliott is primed and ready for a bounceback season Biggest concerns when matching up against the Giants Where the Cowboys have the upper hand against the Giants

We all knew this question would come up at some point. As soon as we heard the announcement at the 2020 NFL Draft, "With the seventeenth pick the Dallas Cowboys select CeeDee Lamb, wide receiver from the University of Oklahoma." Welcome to the Daily Blitz by DSP Media in partnership with CowboysSI.com. And here we are, a season and calendar year later, and the Cowboys find themselves with a log jam at the wide receiver position. Lamb had an outstanding rookie season in an otherwise terrible 2020 for the Cowboys, and without Dak Prescott for eleven games, Gallup seemed to get lost in the shuffle. Gallup will be a free agent at the end of the upcoming 2021 season. There are options. Will the Cowboys decide they want to keep him and either extend, re-sign, or franchise tag him? Will they try to trade him before or during the season, knowing they have no plans of him returning in 2022? Or will they just say goodbye at the end of 2021 and wish him well with his next NFL team? The Dallas Cowboys Blitzcast
The 2021 season looks to be a bright one for the Dallas Cowboys after a disappointing 2020 campaign. Maybe one of the biggest hurdles for winning the NFC East crown is last year's champion, the Washington Football Team. Welcome to the Daily Blitz by DSP Media in partnership with CowboysSI.com. Washington Football Team on SI staff writer Timm Hamm recently joined Sports Illustrated's Raider Maven Editor and Publisher Hondo Carpenter on the radio. Carpenter was co-hosting with Clay Baker on the "Pritch & Clay" morning show on Raider Nation Radio. Carpenter, Baker, and Hamm discussed the strength and weaknesses of the Washington Football Team, as well as what to expect from new WFT quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. Also discussed is the impact of head coach Ron Rivera and owner Dan Snyder on the team. Can Snyder stay out of Rivera's way as he attempts to build a powerhouse in Washington D.C.? The Dallas Cowboys Blitzcast
The Dallas Cowboys have basically kept their offense from 2020 intact. They get quarterback Dak Prescott back, their offensive line is healthy, and their starting tight end Blake Jarwin returns from injury too. Welcome to the Daily Blitz by DSP Media in partnership with CowboysSI.com. The majority of changes the Cowboys have made come from the defensive side of the ball. And rightfully so. The 2020 Cowboys defense was historically bad. They ranked 28th in the league in points allowed per game with 29.6, 31st in rushing yards allowed per game with 158.8, and they were tied for 31st in touchdowns allowed per game with 3.6. The Cowboys' focus this offseason had to be improving the defense. They appear to have addressed just that in free agency and in the draft. But was it enough? Let's discuss! The Dallas Cowboys Blitzcast
Since 2018 Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Amari Cooper has held the distinction as the No. 1 wideout on the club. Could that be changing soon? Welcome to the Daily Blitz by DSP Media in partnership with CowboysSI.com. The stage is set for things to possibly change in the wide receiver ranks, as Cowboys' second-year receiver CeeDee Lamb looks to improve on a stellar rookie campaign. Is it crazy to think Lamb could take over that No. 1 designation in just his second year on the team? Probably. But it doesn't mean it can't and won't happen soon enough. Cooper has not been the most reliable wide receiver since arriving in Dallas via the trade with Oakland in 2018. He's disappeared from the offense at times and has dealt with nagging injuries that have kept him out of the lineup. In fact, his recent ankle surgery might prevent him from participating in the start of training camp this month. Would Cooper work better as a slot receiver, allowing Lamb to work from the outside? Keeping Dak upright will be a priority next season. Can Collins and Smith stay healthy enough to do it? Dak Prescott's return under center should certainly be the most-watched storyline for 2021. And rightfully so. Welcome to the Daily Blitz by DSP Media in partnership with CowboysSI.com. For the Cowboys to fully realize their offensive potential, they desperately need to keep Dak healthy. Part of keeping Dak healthy will fall on the shoulders of offensive tackles Tyron Smith and La'el Collins. Smith and Collins are coming off their own injuries, and it's because of those injuries that there is reason to be concerned. Both players are coming off surgeries. Collins had surgery in October to repair his hip, and Smith is coming off his own surgery to repair neck and back issues he's been struggling with since 2016. Both players are on track and say they are healthy now in anticipation of the beginning of the 2021 season. But can they hold up for 17 games? Let's discuss! The Dallas Cowboys Blitzcast
The Dallas Cowboys' 2020 run defense ranked 31st in the NFL last season. That's second-worst in the league. Welcome to the Daily Blitz by DSP Media in partnership with CowboysSI.com. The Cowboy' 2021 schedule looks to be loaded with running back talent again, with the likes of Christian McCaffrey, Saquon Barkley (twice), Dalvin Cook, Alvin Kamara, and Josh Jacobs just to name a few. How can it get better for the Cowboys? First of all, this isn't the same team as it was in 2020. Several additions to the defensive line and linebacker position should help. Secondly, the "mastermind" behind last season's defense, Mike Nolan, is gone. Maybe the biggest question is, "Can it acutally get any worse?" the defensive line should be better, the linebackers should be better, and the defensive ends should be better. But is it possible for a better offense to help the defense? Let's discuss! The Dallas Cowboys Blitzcast
The Dallas Cowboys lost a legend in Jason Witten. Twice. As such a large part of the offense during his time in Dallas, it was thought upon his final retirement that the team might have a hole at the tight end position. Welcome to the Daily Blitz by DSP Media in partnership with CowboysSI.com. Fast-forward to 2020. The Cowboys' perceived starting tight end, Blake Jarwin goes down in the first quarter of the first game of the season. Another hole at tight end? Insert Dalton Schultz. Not a step was lost. Schultz performed admirably while filling in for Jarwin, to the tune of 63 catches, 615 yards, and four touchdowns during the season. That doesn't sound like a hole. Now, in 2021, a healthy Blake Jarwin returns fresh juicy contract extension back in 2019, and he's ready to resume his role as the starting tight end. Can the Cowboys manage to play both Jarwin and Schultz? Who would have to come off the field to accommodate two tight end offensive sets? Is it possible the Cowboys have a surplus at tight end? The Dallas Cowboys Blitzcast
Upon arriving in Oxnard, California for training camp, the Dallas Cowboys will have a lot of work to do to address existing problems, especially on the defensive side of the ball. And we won't really know for sure if those issues are addressed sufficiently until the team lines up for the regular season. Welcome to the Daily Blitz by DSP Media in partnership with CowboysSI.com. There are plenty of reasons to be excited about the Cowboys' chances of winning the NFC East in 2021. Most of those reasons include the offensive side of the ball. But what about the defense? Are there some position groups that are already better? Let's look at six position groups that the Cowboys have already addressed, and why we feel confident about them as the team heads to Oxnard for training camp. Let's discuss!
