Texas A&M Aggies Daily Blitz - 9/15/21 - Getting To Know The Enemy: New Mexico Lobos

The Texas A&M Aggies didn't have the best showing in week 2 against the Colorado Buffaloes. Presented by BetUS.com - Bet with the 3-Decade leader, BetUS! But there's not time to panic and worry, because week 3 is right around the corner and it comes at home at Kyle Field in the form of the New Mexico Lobos. Last week, Lobos' quarterback Terry Wilson passed for 382 yards and three touchdowns to beat in-state rival New Mexico State 34-23. Wilson is a product of the transfer portal with SEC experience and comes to the New Mexico program after leaving Kentucky and give New Mexico a much-needed passing attack. Last week, the Lobos' leading rusher, Bobby Cole, went off for 107 yards on 20 carries while leading receiver Mannie Logan-Greene had 106 yards on seven catches. The Lobos' offense is a balanced attack with Wilson under center. On defense, the Lobos are not without playmakers. Linebacker Tavian Combs is the team's returning leading tackler and has his eyes all over the field. What should the Aggies expect from the Lobos in week 3? Let's discuss! BetUS.com - https://bit.ly/DSPMediaBetUS It seems like after the Colorado win, there was much more for Aggies fans to be worried about than excited about. Welcome to the Aggies Daily Blitz by DSP Media in partnership with AllAggies.com. In between the panic, the worry, and the Haynes King injury, A&M fans still have plenty to be thankful for and look forward to for 2021. The Aggies still pulled out a win, albeit in a come-from-behind effort with a backup quarterback. Is Zach Calzada really a backup quarterback? He challenged King through most of the fall and spring for the starting job, and seemingly they were both still in it until the week before the Kent State game when King was named the starter. And is King really that great? The offense sputtered at times against both Kent State and Colorado before King left the game. Is the defense the saving grace for this program right now? Is it possible a team can win a national title with just defense? Is the experience gained in the Colorado win worth anything? Let's discuss! Last season, no team in the Pac-12 had lower expectations than the Colorado Buffaloes, and they still ended up as maybe the biggest surprise in the conference. Led by head coach Karl Dorrell who was hired in late Feb. 2020, the Buffs faced all the same COVID challenges as all other teams last year. Still, in a COVID-shortened season, Colorado was still in contention for the Pac-12 South title until the last game of the season, found themselves in the national rankings at one point, and played in a bowl game for only the second time since 2007. Dorrell was rewarded with Pac-12 Coach of the Year honors. While Dorell and the Buffaloes had a good 2020, there is still plenty of work to be done. There's a ton of talent, but just as many question marks, including but not limited to roster depth. Colorado has won more than five games in a season just once in the last 13, and it won't get any easier in 2021. Let's take a look at the Buffaloes' strengths and weaknesses as they face off against the Aggies on Saturday in Denver, Colorado. In a game that saw them favored by roughly 30-points, the Texas A&M Aggies couldn't seem to separate themselves from the Kent State Golden Flashes on Saturday night at Kyle Field. BetUS.com - https://bit.ly/DSPMediaBetUS Welcome to the Aggies Daily Blitz by DSP Media in partnership with AllAggies.com. In the first full-capacity game since 2019, Kyle Field was rocking. It was rocking red, white, and blue instead of the traditional maroon and white to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the United States. While the team did eventually separate themselves and cover that 30-point spread, it took a while. There were some things that went right on Saturday night and a few things that went wrong for A&M football. Some players did show up to play from the get-go, including Devon Achane, Leon O'Neal Jr, and Isaiah Spiller. Haynes King got his first-ever collegiate start, but it looked shaky at times, the Aggies' defense definitely showed up, and against the No. 1 offense from the previous season, and regardless of what we saw on television, the A&M offense has some work to do. BetUS.com The Texas A&M football program looks to have one of its best seasons of all time. In a COVID-19 shortened 2020, the Aggies blasted to a 9-1 regular season in a conference that is generally regarded as the most difficult to win in. Welcome to the Aggies Daily Blitz by DSP Media in partnership with AllAggies.com. A&M will look to start the season off right, with a dominating win over Kent State at Kyle Field in the season opener on September 4, 2021. In every way you look at it, this game screams blowout. Kent State played only four games in the MAC last season due to COVID-19 restrictions and protocol. It was a very small sample size with which to judge the Golden Flashes, but they allowed 38 points per game in those four games. This could be a huge confidence booster for Haynes King and the offense before better teams appear on the schedule. Let's take a look at the strengths and weaknesses of the Golden Flashes and discuss what we should expect on September 4 at Kyle Field. Haynes King and Johnny Manziel both bring a dual-threat style of quarterback play to the table, but is that where the similarities end? - The Aggies Daily Blitz Podcast Presented by BetUS.com - Bet with the 3-Decade leader, BetUS! You bet, you win, you get paid. BetUS.com If you were around to see Johnny "Football" Manziel play high school or college football, or even pro ball, you know what his game is about. You know what he brought to the "football table" as a dual-threat quarterback. Welcome to the Aggies Daily Blitz by DSP Media in partnership with AllAggies.com. Manziel will always and forever be remembered as one of the most entertaining and unpredictable players in college football. He'll also be remembered as the first-ever freshman to win the coveted Heisman Trophy, celebrating college football's best player, and only the second Aggie to do so. Newly-crowned Aggies starting quarterback Haynes King fits in that same dual-threat category, but there are differences. I'm not going to sit here and tell you that King will win the Heisman as a freshman, or at all, and I'm not saying he'll be a first-round NFL draft pick. But what I will say, is watch out, SEC. Things are about to get interesting. Sophomore Zach Calzada and redshirt freshman Haynes King are "both very capable of leading this team," Aggies head coach Jimbo Fisher told the media at A&M media day. BetUS.com Welcome to the Aggies Daily Blitz by DSP Media in partnership with AllAggies.com. "Zach is an NFL talent," said Fisher, "and Haynes is an NFL talent." Fisher seemed pretty non-committal about naming a quarterback and about hinting at which one might have the edge, hyping both up equally all spring. But on Wednesday, Fisher confirmed on ESPN Radio that Haynes was the guy. Both are similar in size, with Calzada measuring at 6-4, 210-pounds, and King at 6-3, 200-pounds. But it seems the deciding factor was King's mobility. In the one time we'll hear from offensive coordinator Darrell Dickey all season, he said, "Zach is probably going to be a lot better in the pocket for his (style of) game," Dickey said, "while Haynes is going to be a guy who can really extend plays and probably keep the defense a little more honest - probably a little more scared - with his ability to make plays with his feet." Both are Fisher recruits, and both may have a future in CFB and the NFL. But for now, one gets the start against Kent State on September 4. And his name is Haynes King. There is one opponent that surely will not be overlooked by the Aggies on October 9 at Kyle Field. But the remaining SEC schedule could have one or more "trap games" if A&M becomes complacent. Welcome to the Aggies Daily Blitz by DSP Media in partnership with AllAggies.com. For every SEC team, the in-conference schedule is important. Every single matchup every single week could have playoff and national title implications. The Aggies learned last season that one single loss can cost you an opportunity to play for a national championship. In the COVID-19 schedule of 2020, A&M lost one game to the eventual national champion Alabama Crimson Tide. That proved enough to get a playoff snub from the powers-that-be. It was the Aggies only skid mark on an otherwise perfect season. The blowout win over North Carolina in the Orange Bowl helped a little, but Aggies fans continue to wonder, "what might've been." A&M has a favorable schedule early on that could put them in position to accomplish what they did not last season. But are there any "trap games" that the Aggies could overlook? Let's discuss! BetUS.com Texas A&M football had a historically successful campaign in 2020, with just one loss to the eventual national champion Alabama Crimson Tide. They ended the season with a blowout win over North Carolina in the Orange Bowl, and are looking to carry that momentum into 2021. Welcome to the Aggies Daily Blitz by DSP Media in partnership with AllAggies.com. To play football in the SEC on a regular basis, and to play well, a team has to display a certain amount of 'toughness.' The SEC could be called the "black and blue" league, paying homage to the old NFC North division. But the Aggies have new faces that they'll need to toughen up to be successful in the SEC, and that includes a new quarterback and a few new offensive linemen. How tough is the SEC currently and who might be considered a "cupcake?" In terms of 'toughness,' the Aggies have to rank pretty high in all of college football and the SEC. But where do their opponents rank against each other? Let's discuss! Aggies Daily Blitz
The No. 6 ranking for the Aggies in the recently released Coaches Poll came as no surprise to the football world or A&M fans in College Station. Welcome to the Aggies Daily Blitz by DSP Media in partnership with AllAggies.com. Just about every other ranking by any sports media company had the Aggies in the top-10 heading into the college football season. Because of that ranking, the A&M was given odds by Bleacher Reports judging how all top 10 teams can pull off an undefeated 2021 season. Other notable teams include Clemson, Ohio State, Alabama, and Georgia. B/R shows the Aggies at 50-1 odds to go undefeated in 2021. By comparison, Alabama is 2-1, Clemson is 3-2, and Oklahoma is 9-2. Much like other media outlets this offseason, B/R noted the biggest obstacle for the Aggies and their undefeated season is the quarterback position and replacements on the offensive line. Even more so than the new A&M quarterback (whomever that may be) and a new offensive line, Bleacher Report names the Alabama Crimson Tide as the biggest hurdle the Aggies face. This should come as no surprise, and really, that can be said of just about any SEC team or any program in the country that has eyes on a national title. Not all was bad regarding the Aggies, however, upon review of B/R's ranking: "The good news, though, is the Aggies have an early schedule conducive to such an adjustment period. A road game against one of the worst teams in the Pac-12 (Colorado) is sandwiched by home games against Kent State and New Mexico. After that, it's home games against Arkansas and Mississippi State, who figure to be the two worst teams in the SEC West. Jimbo Fisher could decide a month into the season that he made the wrong choice for starting quarterback and the Aggies still might start out 5-0." If the Aggies get to 5-0, and they should, that could be where things get difficult, with Alabama making a trip to Kyle Field on October 9. Alabama, however, has its own problems. Replacements are needed for the Crimson Tide at quarterback, wide receiver, tight end, and offensive line. Alabama head coach Nick Saban has not had a difficult time in the past replacing skill-position players, but if Fisher and company are going to pounce, this season is probably the time. To put it into perspective, B/R put it this way: "To reiterate, though, we're talking about a world in which a team with a new quarterback and an 80 percent new offensive line beats one of the greatest dynasties in the history of college football." The evaluation of A&M's weaknesses is true. There are a lot of new moving parts, especially to the offense. But if an undefeated season for the Aggies can happen, it could very well be 2021. Texas A&M is likely considered to be the second-best team in the SEC West, second only to Alabama, at least until the two teams meet in week six at Kyle Field. The Aggies are still strong on the defensive side of the ball, returning nine of 11 starters. But the offensive line lost three of four starters, returning only Kenyon Green. While Green can carry his own, possibly being the best offensive lineman in the country, he'll need some help protecting A&M's young quarterbacks. A&M also needs a little help in the secondary, and help is there. We'll discuss a possible player who can improve on a good season in 2020 to make a great 2021. The Aggies have a wealth of talent at wide receiver and tight end, but is there a player who stepped up last season that can contribute with even a greater role in 2021? Let's discuss! Today we'll discuss three players who might offer some of that surprise production, and how they'll help.
