African Americans spend far too much money outside of the Black community, and the Black Dollar Movement was founded to raise awareness of this. The Movement seeks to examine both the financial advantages of investing in the Black community and how this can be used as a catalyst to advance the social and political standing of many African Americans. However, this movement is not just confined to American society because intercontinental trade plays a significant role in Africa's prosperity.
Inequality in wealth between various racial groups in America is a growing issue. Middle-class Black households had an average wealth of $13,024 in 2016, compared to White households, which had an average wealth of $149,703 in 2016. African Americans have a $1.3 trillion purchasing power, but this money only lasts six hours in the black community. This indicates that only about 2% of Black households' gross national income in America goes to Black-owned businesses.
The goal of the movement is to educate people about the value of money and encourage them to invest in their local communities. Investing in education, funding black businesses and entrepreneurs, and promoting wealth accumulation as a means of achieving generational success can all be done with the money that Black households could allocate to their own communities. Communities can then gain from economic development, reduced unemployment, and improved living conditions generally.
But the accumulation of wealth includes more than just financial advantages; it also includes political influence. For instance, wealthier interest groups in black communities are able to raise money to support candidates for political office and run campaigns on issues of importance, which increases the political influence and representation of black communities. Additionally, black businesses and individuals have the resources and knowledge to lobby public officials on matters that directly affect them, which promotes the development of better policies that take the needs and interests of black communities into account.
