Minimalism and Mindful Living with The Sustainable Duo

Amelia chats with Carly Bergman and Brenden Fitzgerald, AKA @sustainable_duo about zero waste and minimalist living, the joys of eating from the earth, sustainable food growing, connecting to the earth and eco-spirituality, and conscious entrepreneurship.

We dive into:

- Carly and Brenden's contrasting roots/upbringing and how they each found veganism and sustainable/minimalist living, and each other

- How and why Brenden went from eating a heavy meat-based diet his whole life to vegan overnight (he's got great tips for those who don't like/aren't used to eating plants)

- How living authentically and in alignment with your values and your truth is one of the most valuable contributions you can make, and is what inspires real change in the world

- Why food forests are our future and how we can grow our own food anywhere, even in northern climates

- Why and how Carly and Brenden started giving up possessions and living minimally, and why it brings them so much joy, connection and serenity (Documentary recommendations: Minimalism on Netflix)

- Eco-spirituality and the benefits of camping and being in connection with the earth. Carly shares some wonderful mindfulness and ground practices you can do (Book she recommends: How the Train a Wild Elephant)

- Brenden shares about what he's doing to curb plastic waste in his company Planet Protein, and how we can still live in alignment with values of sustainability and minimalism while being entrepreneurs within a capitalist system

Known as @onedayofwinter on Instagram, a Nicola is a UK blogger and author of Life after Baby Loss: A Companion Guide for Parents. Her candid reflections and insights of her son Winter’s life and raising her rainbow baby Raven deeply resonated with me in my loss and parenting journey, and I was honoured to speak with her and hear first hand her story. Whether you’ve lost someone or know someone who has, there are so many gems in this episode and I hope you enjoy.

Nicola shares about:

  • her pregnancy with Winter and what it was like loosing him unexpected only a day after he was born
  • the taboos and stigma around baby loss, and what she wished she’d known then
  • What others did or said after Winter died that she appreciated the most
  • how she was able to cope and begin to heal in the years that followed
  • What pregnancy after loss was like, and the challenges of parenting a child after loosing one
  • Buddhism and how her meditation practice helped her find peace, perspective and community
  • Breastfeeding a toddler and reflections on cross-cultural parenting norms
  • Self care: how this changes as a mother and how she finds ways to fit it in throughout her days

In this episode Amelia shares the arrival of Ava Rosemary, and chats with fellow loss mom and owner of The Enchanted Farm Sanctuary, Robin Birdsong. Robin lost her beautiful little boy, Danny, to SIDS in 2007. She fell into a depression so deep she couldn’t eat, couldn’t sleep, couldn’t function. Her 10 year relationship with her fiancé, Danny’s father, fell apart. She lost everything, including the will to live. Then finally one night after months of despair she googled “bereaved mother” to find help. What popped up was totally unexpected, and altered the course of her life completely...

This is a powerful episode and a reminder that our deepest grief can also become our greatest ally and gift. Our suffering can help us become more empathetic and deepen our resolve to help others. Out of the darkest days of our life may come a spark of light that reveals truths that were hidden or we were blind to before. Pain can propel us towards living a life with more meaning and purpose.

Amelia interviews Dr Renae Thomas, an Australian-born lifestyle medicine doctor in Loma Linda, California. Loma Linda is one of five extensively researched Blue Zones, which are places in the world where people live longer and healthier than anywhere else on earth. The average lifespan of Loma Linda residents is 10 years longer than the US national average, and they are 10 times more likely to live to 100 than typical Americans. And they aren’t just living long either—these people are living into old age while remaining active and healthy, and often without medication or disability.

How is this possible? What role does nutrition play? We talk about this and so much more. Dr Thomas' enthusiasm is truly contagious and uplifting, and you’ll finish this episode feeling inspired and amazed at the power we have to transform our own lives.

We talk about:

  • Her dad's cancer diagnosis and why she went plant-based over 30 years ago (before “plant-based” was a word!)
  • Why she decided to go to medical school after first starting a career in health and nutrition journalism
  • How she managed to land her dream job in Loma Linda, and what researchers have learned from studying this population about the relationship between dietary patterns and the prevention or reversal of diseases such as diabetes, cancer, heart disease, stroke, Alzheimers, and more.
  • Her work at the clinic in nearby San Bernadino, one of the poorest zip codes in California where the people suffer from very poor health and short lifespans, and some incredible inspiring stories of patients who have transformed their lives
  • How the media and nutrition education we receive is strongly influenced by industry interests and economics rather than science
  • How preventative and lifestyle medicine is changing lives everywhere and revolutionizing the medical system (and society)
  • how we can inspire, motivate and support others to make positive lifestyle changes in a love-centred way

About Dr. Renae Thomas:

Dr Thomas is completing a masters in Public Health (Population Medicine), is a published co-author and an international speaker on nutrition and health, is the co-Vice President of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine Trainees, is on the lifestyle track committee for the American College of Preventive Medicine, a Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine spokesperson, and a qualified yoga teacher. Her greatest passion is empowering people to optimize their health through lifestyle choices in an evidence-based, gimmick-free and fad-free fashion.
